Summary of Case: Works as head horseman for brother 360 acre farm, father is 71 and brother runs the farm and when away on business James looks after the farm. James Ventress was ill in bed after an operation, hence ‘not attested’. Local tribunal finds father has eight or nine sons, of whom none have joined the colours. Other sons have taken other farms or hired out to other employers and now only three sons at home with two other men to help. Men over military age could be found to replace two of these sons at home.
