Summary of Case: John Wilford & Sons, Linen Manufacturers in Brompton originally appealed against the conscription of Edwin Smith Tyreman on the grounds that, ‘Brompton village is entirely dependant on two linen mills for the employment of the whole village. If this man joins the army the mills will have to close’. The local tribunal gave him absolute exemption as six brothers had joined the army. The military representative appealed against this, ‘his services are not indispensable, therefore the certificate should not be for absolute exemption.’
