Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 686 Appeal against conscription of: Alexander Gardner Henderson Age: 25 Address: c/o Mrs Woodcock, Murton, York Occupation: Sorting clerk in post office Local tribunal: Flaxton Rural District Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act Grounds for appeal: f) conscientious objection Appellant: Alexander Gardner Henderson Summary of Case: My case to the local tribunal was the socialist one. I am entirely opposed to joining in the present horrible, needless, slaughter because as a socialist I recognise the foreigner as a brother in humanity and because I recognise that this war is the direct result of the absorbing greed for trade, territory, and prestige, which obsessed the leading nations for half-a-century. I cannot therefore accept the decision of the above [local] tribunal which refused consideration to this purely socialist point of view. Supporting evidence: No Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 31 May 1916. No appearance. Since committed suicide. |
