TitleWWI Appeal Tribunal papers: George Dale
DescriptionNorth Riding appeal tribunal number: 602
Appeal against conscription of: George Dale
Age: 20
Address: Studfast Hill, Bilsdale
Occupation: Farm manager
Local tribunal: Stokesley Rural District Council
Central tribunal: No
Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested
Grounds for appeal: Not stated
Appellant: Stephen Hoggart, Master
Summary of case: Appellant said he needed Dale on his farm; he could not do the work. The local tribunal stated: ‘The case of this man’s family is the worst case of shirking service that has come under the consideration of this tribunal.’ Dale’s father had five sons, all single, four of military age and living at Stone House. When call up started three of them were sent away to other farms ‘with the undoubted intention of evading service’. The case had caused much comment and discontent locally amongst men who had been called up. The North Riding Appeal Tribunal allowed an extension to 1 Oct 1916. The recruiting officer asked for leave to appeal to the Central Tribunal on the grounds that the decision of the North Riding Appeal Tribunal would make his work, of getting other men in the vicinity who know the case, ‘almost untenable.’ [See letter in case papers for NRCC/CL 9/600].
