TitleWWI Appeal Tribunal papers: William Dale
DescriptionNorth Riding appeal tribunal number: 600
Appeal against conscription of: William Dale
Age: 22
Address: Stonehouse Court, Bilsdale
Occupation: Shepherd and horseman
Local tribunal: Stokesley Rural District Council
Central tribunal: No
Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested
Grounds for appeal: Not stated
Appellant: Laurence Dale, father and employer
Summary of case: Appellant said he needed Dale on his farm; he could not do the work. The local tribunal was ‘unanimous’ that Dale was ‘shirking service’; appellant had five sons, all single, four of military age and living at Stone House. When call up started three of them were sent away to other farms ‘with the avowed and undisguised intention of dodging service’. The appellant had inflated the number of sheep on his farm. The case had caused much comment and discontent locally amongst men who had been called up. The North Riding Appeal Tribunal allowed an extension to 1 Oct 1916. The recruiting officer asked for leave to appeal to the Central Tribunal on the grounds that the decision of the North Riding Appeal Tribunal would make his work, of getting other men in the vicinity who know the case, ‘almost untenable.’ [See NRCC/CL 9/602]
