Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 5792 Appeal against conscription of: Herbert Ernest Gossop Age: 37 Address: 66 South Bank Avenue, York Occupation: Clerk and assistant cashier Local tribunal: York City Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested Grounds for appeal: Not stated Medical grade: 2 Appellant: Herbert Ernest Gossop Summary of case: The first appeal to York City tribunal was made by his employers, the York Equitable Industrial Society, and heard on 20 Aug 1918. He was engaged in confidential paperwork, much of it for various government departments. He was granted a delay of one month for the firm to find a replacement clerk, with no leave to apply for a renewal. Previous appeal was heard by the North Riding tribunal on 18 Sept 1918, when the employers appealed again, but they had made no effort to obtain a substitute. The appeal was allowed to 1 Mar 1919 with leave to appeal again. By this stage of the war, any man given exemption was automatically expected to join the Volunteer Training Corps, but Gossop claimed that he was not made aware of this, so on receiving his instructions to join, he appealed again to the North Riding Tribunal to remove the obligation on the grounds of his wife's pregnancy and delicate health (medical certificate included) and the time needed to work his 300sq yd allotment.
