Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 5724 Appeal against conscription of: Clement H Holmes Age: 44 Address: 14 Diamond Street, York Occupation: Stonemason Local tribunal: York City Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation, b) engaged in different occupation, d) serious hardship Medical grade: 1 Appellant: Clement Hansell Holmes, for the Dean & Chapter, York Minster Summary of case: The local tribunal justified their decision to dismiss Holmes appeal, stating that 'However desirable the removal of the stained glass may be, the local tribunal thought the grounds were not sufficiently strong to keep this man out of the Army. When granting the former period of temporary exemption, the tribunal intimated that they meant it to be final in fact.' Holmes appealed this decision stating that he is a foreman stonemason at York Minster, in charge of removing the stained glass in the Minster to a place of safety in the event of air raids alongside his repair and cleaning of the glass. As the only stonemason still employed by the Minster, he is the only person with the experience to carry out these duties. Supporting evidence: Yes Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 18 Sep 1918. Allowed to 1 Mar 1919. |
