Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 5718 Appeal against conscription of: John A Sturdy Age: 39 Address: Cattle Market, York Occupation: Publican Local tribunal: York City Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act Grounds for appeal: Medical grade: Not stated Appellant: Henry Tolson, National Service Representative Summary of case: John Sturdy appeared before the local tribunal on 10 May 197 stating that he was a Hotel Proprietor with a thriving business centred around the market days in York. He also billeted the military. Additionally, he worked six acres of his own land and had a motor car and taxi which he used for hire purposes. He voluntarily joined the Volunteer Force and had been in regular training for Home Defence for over a year. The decision of the local tribunal on 10 May 1917 was that the certificate of conditional exemption was to be withdrawn and varied to temporary exemption to 10 June 1917 and no further application could be made without the consent of the local tribunal previously obtained. The North Riding Appeal Tribunal decided on 4 June 1917 that the appeal be adjourned for him to be employed in motor ploughing as per his application for this occupation. 14 July 1917 the appeal was allowed conditional as long as he remained working in agriculture to the satisfaction of the military representative. A further appeal from the National Service Representative in September 1918 requested that the exemption certificate from the military be withdrawn as John Sturdy holds an additional agriculture certificate. There is not a need for two exemption certificates to be held.
