Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 5717 Appeal against conscription of: John Bosomworth Age: 41 Address: 73 Walmgate, York Occupation: Butcher Local tribunal: York City Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation, b) engaged in different occupation Medical grade: 2 Appellant: J Bosomworth Summary of case: Appellant and his solicitor appeared before the local tribunal on 27 Aug 1918 on the grounds of hardship as he works his business alone as his employees have been called up to serve in the forces. When all the butchers in the area were considered in June 1918 the appellant was one of the men whom it was considered could be spared. A two month exemption was given to allow the appellant to make arrangements as no further application of appeal would be allowed based on the same facts. Bosomworth states his circumstances have changed with a considerable drop in income and turnover and customers. Because of these changes in circumstances he appeals and states that he was willing to work one day a week on the land, but his work is of national interest and that his is in a certified occupation.
