Boak is engaged in work of very high national importance. However, a military appeal was brought in Sept 1918 because the War Agricultural Committee did not grant exemption on the grounds of applicant's occupation as Stores Manager and Clerk under the Food Production Department, which was Boaks main occupation. This work could be done by a woman. Boak appeals this stating that he was in fact a master painter and sole proprietor of his business which serving in the army would mean closing down after 103 years. Additionally, he works in an occupation of national importance having charge of a very valuable government plant. He also was the local agent under the ministry of Labour having Employment Exchange Powers. Supporting evidence: No Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 18 Sep 1918. Allowed to 1 Nov 1918 to enable the application for exemption to be made to the War Agricultural Committee |
