He now appealed on the grounds that his occupation was protected from military service by the War Agricultural Committee being the only joiner and wheelwright in the two villages on the moors. He had previously been granted conditional exemption on two occasions. Additionally, he was the only undertaker in the village, and he had elderly parentsÂ’ dependent upon him with no private means who could not live on the separation allowance if he were to be called up. He regularly drilled with the North Riding Volunteers in accordance with his condition of exemption.
