He ran a business with a partner providing second hand clothing in Whitby and this was the only business offering this service in this area where it served the 'poor working class'. And therefore, of national importance. The business partner was called up to serve on the understanding that Albert Coates would continue to carry on the business. His appeal in July 1918 to the local tribunal was refused stating that he was not to be called up till 2 Sept 1918. A further appeal against this decision was made and his business partner was given special travelling leave of absence from the front to appear at the North Riding Appeal Tribunal with Albert Coates in York to present the case that their business was in the national interest.
