Summary of case: Butcher and farmer in a business which has been established for nearly 40 years. He has 1600 registered customers. He does his own slaughtering and has a turnover of £160 per week or over £8,000 per annum. Carr also has a smallholding of 6.5 acres. Prior to the Military Service Act his brother who was over military age assisted him as Carr is a low grade man. He is now Grade 3 and has been granted conditional exemption by the local tribunal provide he remains in his current occupation. ‘I shall be very little use to the army and am fulfilling a more useful purpose in civil life by continuing my business which feeds a large portion of the population of Grangetown.’
