Summary of case: In June 1918, following his appeal, Greenwood enrolled as a War Work Volunteer with munitions as instructed by the Labour Exchange. As a result of this he obtained a protection certificate. The national service representative’s appeal was initially allowed with an exemption to 1 Sep 1918 to make arrangements for the continuation of the business. Following this appeal Arthur Willey, Greenwood’s solicitor writes on the 28 August 1918 to the Clerk of the North Riding Appeal Tribunal stating that Greenwood ‘has now obtained a protection certificate as a War Work Volunteer. Kindly withdraw the application for renewal. Mr Greenwood of course reserved the right to renew his application if his protection certificate is at any time withdrawn.’
