Summary of case: In their reasons for refusing Hewling’s appeal, the local tribunal stated that Hewling had already been given ‘several periods of temporary exemption, but the tribunal think it is possible for arrangements to be made for the necessary attentions to his father [invalid requiring male attendance to his needs]. The mother is not old or bedridden. A son-in law lives in the same house and could give attention during his dinner-hour. There is also a daughter and although her confinement is expected, the local tribunal have asked that the appellant shall not be called up till 20 February 1918, so that he shall be at home till after the event.’ In February 1917 Hewling is granted a renewal until 23 August 1918 conditional on his joining the Volunteer Force. However, his employers state that this is very difficult given the current time as often all the workforce can be called upon at short notice. They ask for a review of this condition. The Assistant Adjutant at Colliergate Drill Hall in York writes to The Clerk of The North Riding Appeal Tribunal stating: ‘It is felt that this man ought to drill.’ On 18 September 1918 there is a note stating ‘Relieved from liability to Volunteer Service’
