Summary of case: When originally called up, Hutchinson had stated that he was a gardener and joiner working with farmers in the area. The local tribunal refused his appeal as his work at Hill, Richards and Co Ltd, they ‘consider he went there for protection from military service’. Hutchinson appealed this decision: ‘I object to my grading having been discharged from the police force as medically unfit. I have been rejected three times by the Friendly Society (The Oddfellows). I am 46 ½ years of age, born 12 Dec 1871.’ Being over 45 he applied for a work of national importance at Hill Richards and Co Ltd. Following the decision of the local tribunal the national service and asked for a copy of his medical certificate from his doctor as the local tribunal had lost the one, he had sent in support of his original appeal for medical re-examination.
