Summary of case: Readman is running his business with his 16 year old son, his other son was in the Navy. He was the only chimney sweep in Scalby, as well as the only mason. He would have to sell up, causing hardship. The local tribunal granted temporary exemption, on personal grounds, to 5 Sept 1918. The national service representative appealed, saying it was not in the national interest to remain in civil life and the plea of ‘personal grounds ‘was not sufficient reason for excusing him from military service.’
