Summary of case: The local tribunal did not grant Ferguson an exemption: ‘The local tribunal cannot, if they are to show any degree of fairness, exempt a billiard saloon attendant who keeps a few hens whilst thousands of men with really heavy liabilities both financial and domestic are being taken into the army.’ Ferguson appeals this decision, stating that he has 86 hens and supplies a few thousand eggs per year for consumption. He has recently taken up breeding hens and has supplied 338 chicks in the last year. He also manages a billiard hall in the evenings. He states he has a weak heart and cannot walk far without being out of breath. The tribunal have taken a very dim view of Henry's appeal.
