Summary of case: ‘Appellant carries on a one man business (having two employees dependant on him) The business was established by appellant’s father 45 years ago and has been carried on by the son solely since the father’s death 14 years ago. He is a joiner and undertaker being the only one in the district. He is a contractor for rifle ranges (through R E Stores, York) throughout the whole of the Northern Command and has done this work for the last three years. He has one child aged 7 who is in need of great care and attention and would have to close down if taken in to the army and his wife (owing to illness of the child) would be unable to get employment which would help them live in the event of the husband being called to the colours.’
