Summary of case: The local tribunal had granted exemption to 30 September 1918 and that he need not join the volunteers. His employer appeals this decision stating that that Knowles is engaged in very important work – military, corporation, voter’s lists, legal and commercial work. He is invaluable to us in that he is able to correct and put right the linotype machines when anything goes wrong, which in such delicate machinery happens often.’ However, the reason the local tribunal give for their decision states: ‘While it is recognised that printers are scarce this firm still has as many linotype operators (4) as before the war and the tribunal thought this man could be spared.’
