Summary of case: On 11 June 1918 the local tribunal gave granted an exemption until 1 December 1918. Due to the business obligations of BrownÂ’s employer, Plews and Sons Ltd, Brewers, wine and spirit merchants. Brown was a drayman with experience of delivering, and responsible for five horses. He worked in a heavy munitions area and liked to ensure there was beer for the working man. The national service representative appealed this decision stating it was no longer in the national interest.
