Summary of case: The local tribunal had granted a temporary exemption to 1 December 1918 on the grounds that Allenby was a widower with seven children. His eldest daughter, 18, looks after the household and if this man were called up there would be no-one to look after the family. The national service representative appealed this decision stating: ‘That considering the allowances which would be allotted to this man’s eight motherless children there would be no real case of domestic hardship’.
