Summary of case: The local tribunal stated that they had exempted Broadbelt as he is responsible for ordering and assisting in the allocation of the many hundreds of imported agricultural machinery. The Managing Director of Backhouse of Fossbridge, agricultural Engineers has been ill in bed for three months this year and so cannot take his place. The need which his mother has for special attention is supported by a doctor’s certificate. The national service representative disagreed with the exemption and appealed against it stating that it is no longer in the national interest that this man should remain in civil employment.
