Summary of case: In his appeal to the local tribunal, Smith stated that he would have to close his business down if called up, which would cause serious financial hardship, and because he was a member of the civil guard and of the motorcycle section of the North Riding Volunteers, the local tribunal granted him exemption until the 1 September 1918. However, the national service representative disagreed, ‘It is not in the national interest that this man… should any longer remain in civil employment as a hair specialist and chiropodist’.
