Summary of case: In his appeal to the local tribunal Spence states that his wife in a delicate state of health, dependent upon him. Runs business on his own as a hairdresser, tobacconist and confectioner. Business acquires personal attention, will be financially ruined if called upon and would have to close down as there is no one he could leave in charge. Member of the Tees Garrison Air Defence and employed at the Linthorpe Light where he is 3 or 4 nights a week. Would be prepared to go upon work of national importance if it meant he could keep up his business at nights - he previously worked for Messrs Bolckow. He was granted a temporary exemption to 1 September 1918 as his duties are in connection with the anti-aircraft gun. The national service representative appealed against this decision.
