Summary of case: He has a family of 4 little ones ages ranging from 15 months to 13, none of them can earn anything. His wife has already lost one brother, killed, another was wounded and 3 still in the army, and if he is made to go it would cause serious financial hardship as he is the only one supporting his family. The local tribunal granted temporary exemption to 1 October 1918 as serious hardship would ensue if he were called to the army. However, the national service representative wrote that ‘it is not in the national interest that the man who has been passed fit for general service should any longer remain in civil employment as a tailor.’
