Age: 44
Address: 17 Soppett Street, Redcar

Local tribunal: Middlesbrough Borough Council

Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act
Grounds for appeal: Not stated
Appellant: M Thomas, National Service Representative
Summary of case: Metcalf suffered from a bad rupture, not able to work without the aid of a truss and then not without strain. He has a family of 4 little ones aged 3-11 and a delicate wife. He also had just taken over an allotment and spent a considerable sum of money planting vegetables which if not attended to will be a serious loss to a man in his position. The local tribunal granted temporary exemption to 1 October 1918 stating that serious hardship would ensue if this man were called up to the army. However, the national service representative wrote that ‘it is not in the national interest that the man who has been passed fit for general service should any longer remain in civil employment as a Foreman Tailor.’
