Summary of case: In their appeal to the local tribunal his parents stated that he should be allowed temporary exemption in order for him to take his exam to become a primary teacher, which he had been preparing for over the last 2 years. The local tribunal granted an exemption to the end of July 1918 in order for Liverseed to take his exams. The national service representative disagreed with this and appealed: ‘I contend that it is no longer in the national interest that a single man of 18 years of age and fit for grade one, should be retained in civil life.’
