Summary of case: In his appeal to the local tribunal, Snowdon stated that he is the licenced proprietor of the commercial hotel and that a woman could not manage such a large house. He has a wife and four children, one of whom is an invalid; he assists his father in the management of the Lingdale Hotel as he cannot manage on his own due to his age. He also manages the affairs of his deceased brother whose widow is an invalid with four children. The local tribunal granted a temporary exemption for one month to obtain work of national importance. The national service representative disagreed with this and appealed: ‘I contend that it is no longer in the national interest that this man should be retained in civil life.’
