Summary of case: Bennet said he was nearly 42 and had a wife and two children. He had been dangerously ill with pneumonia and had not properly recovered – he had to have a fire in his bedroom and had to take the greatest care possible not to get wt. He could not now stand the exposure of Army life. He also felt he was doing essential work in supplying food. The local tribunal stated tha1t ‘someone must go into the Army’. ‘If sympathy was a good ground for exemption Bennett would be exempted.’
