Summary of case: Clifford had already had a series of conditional, temporary exemptions. He said he was engaged on work of national importance, carting munitions – a certificate from his employers, confirming this, was attached. He had a delicate wife and two children, the elder was slightly paralysed, the other still a baby. He formerly employed six men but now only two. Also, he had had two operations from which he had not recovered. He also had rheumatism and ear trouble. The previous year he had had double pneumonia and pleurisy. His solicitor said that the previous exemptions had been on health grounds and his occupational claim had not been dealt with. Replying to this letter, the Clerk of the North Riding Appeal Tribunal said that ‘applicants cannot now be professionally represented’. The appeal was dismissed and the appellant was not to be called up before 15 Jul 1918, to allow him to make arrangements. [See also NRCC/Cl 9/1/4684]
