Summary of case: The local tribunal had granted a certificate of exemption on condition that he remained in the same occupation.. On 17 April 1918 they reviewed the certificate and stipulated that the exemption would continue as long as Carey joined the ‘Civil Guard’. The national service representative appealed this on the grounds that as Carey had been passed fit for general service he should no longer remain in civil employment as a general dealer and insurance against.
