Summary of case: An exemption certificate has previously been granted but was withdrawn 17 Apr 1918. This man has been passed for military service and the local tribunal stated that it is no longer in the national interest for him to remain in civil employment, and the certificate of exemption was withdrawn, Crombie appeals against this stating that John Crombie has been Secretary of Cleveland Slag and Concrete Works for 8 years and is the only one who knows the private books and secretarial work. Turnover is £3000 during the past six months and they pay £100 weekly in wages. The company is at present understaffed and ask for a further exemption of three months to work off the contracts and then ‘we shall no doubt be compelled to slow down’ due to lack of labour.
