Summary of case: First appeal by G A Hudson heard 27 Feb 1918, and adjourned for one month, re-adjourned 'to be graded' and finally granted temporary exemption to 10 July 1918. He had a butcher's business supplying a large number of registered customers including the prison and the workhouse. He had brothers already in the army and a dependant sister. The military representative appealed on the grounds that there were three other meat butchers in the town and Hudson was single and graded 2: 'under the rationing scheme the inhabitants of the town and district would not suffer.' The North Riding Appeal Tribunal concurred and varied the certificate. Hudson tried to appeal to the Central Tribunal, supported by the Northallerton Food Control Committee as urged by the Northallerton Urban Butchers' Association. His appeal also stated that his appeal was heard on the very morning that the new regulations were passed so he had no time to get a legal representative who would be able to present his case properly.
