Appeal against conscription of: Leonard Scott junior
Age: 37
Address: Belle View Terrace, Bellerby
Occupation: Farmer
Local tribunal: Leyburn Rural District Council
Central tribunal: No
Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested
Grounds for appeal: Not stated
Appellant: Frederick Riddell, Military Representative
Summary of case: Scott had been rejected by the Medical Board in May 1916, and passed C1 in December 1916. In Oct 1917 he was allowed 6 months exemption to 1 April 1918. On 15 April 1918 he was allowed a further temporary exemption conditional on his joining the Volunteer Force before 1 May 1918. The military representative appealed on 17 Apr 1918 stating: This man is grade 2 is 37 years old, and has 36 acres of rough grass land 2 stock, 22 ewes and 14 head of cattle. There is obviously no work for a man on this holding, and considering the urgent need of men it does not appear to be in the national interest to retain him in civil life to work this holding. Last year he had no cows in milk, but this year I believe he is milking one. He has a father and a wife who might I think look after the land in his absence. In any case I do not think there would be any difficulty in letting it. He does not hold, I think, an agricultural certificate, and last year was employed about 4 days a week on a contract quarrying stone for the roads, this year he has no contract.’
Supporting evidence: Yes.
