Summary of case: On 9 March 1916 Todd was granted absolute exemption on application by his father: he was already working for the military and other farmers, and his father was three men short of his necessary workforce. The military representative assented to this exemption. On 5 Dec 1917 the father appealed again, on the grounds that his son was the only man who could run and service an agricultural engine specially built for the work of national importance that the farm was doing. This resulted in a temporary exemption until 31 Mar 1918, and the order to go before a medical board. On 20 April 1918 the father appealed again, with details of the work he had in hand, highlighting that if his son joined the army the Agricultural engine, which he ran, would be idle and the other two engines would only be doing two thirds of the work’ upon which they are now engaged.’
