Due to this failure his exemption was withdrawn. He has a blacksmith business which is carried out by him alone and he has no help except a boy who has just left school, this work is extremely long hours and tiring work. He used to have his father and brother to help him but neither are there any more, and his brother has joined the army. William is often under the doctor suffering from Nephritis. He has 130 customers and between 40 to 50 horses a week to shoe. He also has to do the repairing of the various implements belonging to the food production branch from Northallerton. He also repairs agricultural implements. When his brother was with him, his brother did a certain extent of the heavy work, but now he has to do everything for himself.
