Appeal against conscription of: Joseph Steedman
Age: 29
Address: School House, Catterick
Occupation: Headmaster
Local tribunal: Richmond Rural District Council

Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act
Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation, d) serious hardship
Appellant: Rev. William Kerr Smith, Vicar of Catterick representing the Managers of Catterick School
Summary of case: Joseph is a teacher, and other teachers have already been called up to the military, this leading to classes being modified. The managers are asking for further exemption from the military without having to appear before a tribunal, as Mr Smith argues he loses ‘the best part of the day waiting’. The number of children still attending the school is the same, and the numbers at the flying corps at Catterick Aerodrome have doubled in the last six months. If Mr Steedman was called up, there was be no suitable replacement. The managers point out the fact that Steedman is doing effective national work. He has a wife, child and widowed mother dependent on him. [See also NRCC/CL 9/1/4326]
