Summary of case: “I am the sole supporter of my widowed mother who is frequently subjected to taking epileptic fits and therefore cannot be left alone. I wonder in a case like mine, I could be put on war work so that I could be nearer home so that I could keep together a home for my aged mother and also bearable to look after her.” The local tribunal’s decision was that there were relatives in Guisborough who could look after Sunley’s mother whilst he is at work, which is only ten miles away. “He used to work in the mines but was released by the mine owners as not indispensable.” The North Riding appeal tribunal upheld the decision of the local tribunal by dismissing Sunley’s appeal.
