Summary of case: Business is principally wholesale and large retail market. Reuben and his father John run the business. They have 100 acres of land and employ only women on the land. ‘Potter is our book—keeper, salesman and warehouseman. He attends to the storing of the heavy goods. We supply over 300 small shopkeepers with greengrocery in Middlesbrough and district, and he has charge and collects all their accounts. The local tribunal had granted Potter conditional exemption and on the appeal of the military representative this was changed to a temporary exemption. ‘Since the Appeal Tribunal considered the case in January the National Service Representative has met the wholesale fruit and vegetable merchants of Middlesbrough and I think he was satisfied that the staff of our firm had now reached the irreducible minimum.’ [See also NRCC/CL 9/1/4656]
