Summary of case: ‘The business is the sole support of a considerable family of which the applicant is a member. Three of his four brothers of military age joined the army without appealing for exemption. The fourth applied for exemption only because he was the only one left who could carry on the business on which the widowed mother and the younger members of the family are dependent. A soon as the present applicant was old enough to undertake the management or his older brother’s exemption was cancelled on the ground that the present applicant could step into his shoes. The oldest brother is married and is in category B2. He is employed at the Headquarters of the Northern Command at York as a telephone operator and might be much more usefully employed at the business. If his release can be obtained the present applicant is quite ready to withdraw this appeal but one or other of them is essential to carrying on the business.’
