Summary of case: On 17 Nov 1917 Burrowes was allowed exemption to 31 Jan 1918. The local tribunal granted him conditional exemption on more than one occasion as they recognized that there was no one else in the area to do his work. In his appeal to the North Riding Appeal tribunal Burrowed states that he keeps in repair 36 farms plus schools and the gas works. He belongs to the North Riding Volunteer Regiment, works with the National Relief Fund and cultivates vegetables on his small grass field.
