Summary of case: In his appeal to the central tribunal Schumm states: ‘It is expedient in the national interests that I should continue to be engaged in my business and that serious hardship wold ensue owing to business obligations if I had to join the forces. I am a wholesale and retail butcher at Redcar having commenced business 13 years ago. My business is one of the largest in Redcar and my turn over is approximately £150 per week….At the present time a very large proportion of my business is with men employed at the Iron and Steel works in the neighbourhood and with the military.’ Schumm had been before the local tribunal on many occasions and had been granted exemptions. This case arose because the military representative asked for all cases of exemption to be re-examined from February 1917. .
