Summary of case: He works on his father's market garden but the local tribunal felt that a 'boy' of 18 was not essential to its cultivation. Thomas Anderson appealed against this decision stating: ‘ it is essential that my son should be allowed to remain at this work in the garden for four months of the coming year so that he will be able to cultivate the lands and get all the summer and winter crops of vegetables etc sown and planted.’ At the bottom of the appeal form Thomas Anderson has written ‘For time off so that he may assist in the production of food,’ The papers include an application form to the central tribunal and supporting correspondence, but leave for this was refused.
