Summary of case: Turner is responsible for his widowed mother who, a doctor confirmed, suffered from ‘senile debility’ and unable to move without help. Her condition was slightly worse than it was a year ago. His sister is at home and looks after the mother. He has two brothers in the army. Turner's firm did driving for the Army Service Corps and also of the doctor. Despite this, and after previous exemptions, allowed because the local tribunal recognised there would be some hardship if Turner was called up, they now felt they were no longer justified in giving exemption to a single man who had been passed for General Service. Turner appealed against this decision.
