Summary of case: As well as being a bricklayer, Collins had been working on munitions for 15 months ‘mainly on account of his being the Trades Union Secretary’ and Tolson thought it was time he joined the army and it was no longer necessary for him to work in munitions. The clerk of the local tribunal noted Collins had a delicate wife and four children and, because of his Trade Union activity, as well as being a member of the Court of Referees and the Munitions Tribunal, it was felt he was of more use in civil life.
