Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 4613 Appeal against conscription of: Frank Batty Bannister Age: 38 Address: 23 Richardson Street, York Occupation: Grocer's assistant Local tribunal: York City Council Central tribunal: Yes Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation Appellant: S Border, employer Summary of case: Bannister had been granted temporary exemption at an earlier tribunal and the National Service Representative had objected to this. However the tribunal not only refused his appeal but extended the temporary exemption to 31 Dec 1917 with leave to appeal again, which he has now done. His employer states that Bannister has worked for the firm for over 16 years. At present they have only 4 men, including the applicant, left. Of the other 3 men, one is over military age, one who was previously rejected has now been passed C3 and the other man has been discharged from the Army, but may at any time be taken for munition work as he belonged to the Engineers. If bannister has to join the service we shall only have 3 men left. Twenty seven men in the employment of the firm have joined the army and it is respectfully asked that Bannister be granted conditional exemption. The firm have replaced the men who have joined with female labour, but it is almost impossible to get more females for this trade, as munitions and allied work is preferred.
