Summary of case: Smallpage said he could not manage without Sherwood, who had already been rejected three times on medical grounds for ‘chronic lameness’. The firm had lost 32 men and Sherwood was the only one who could supervise those remaining. At the earlier, local tribunal the clerk had said Sherwood's skill could be used in making aeroplanes and one of the other men could do the supervising, or even one of the partners. Later correspondence in the papers, dated 26 Feb and 4 Mar 1918 confirms that Sherwood is graded as ‘Four’. It also states that the appeal could be withdrawn as ‘in the event of the man being put in a higher category and called up, he could again appeal.’
