Summary of case: Hale had already been given several temporary exemptions since 1916, ending at 15 Jan 1918. In the case papers, Hale had written to the local press with his suggestions for helping with fair food distribution, such as preventing farmers from selling food outside their parliamentary district, or providing food tickets to help grocers know when customers had bought their full allocation. Hale's employer had submitted that Hale also was responsible for contracts to repair typewriters ‘for the whole of the Northern Command – as well as those of the North Eastern Railway Co’ He was also a Special Constable.
