Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested

Appellant: Crombie & Son, Solicitor for JH & W Green, employer
Summary of case: The employer's solicitors, Geo Crombie & Sons, said less and less timber was being imported so it was important that local timber production carry on. Redfern was trained and could not be spared. Also, they referred to changes in the Army Council Instruction regarding ages of people not to be called up. The inference was ‘that if a firm appoint a man who is younger than the age limits referred to, in the important position of Foreman Manager, he may and still probably ought to be exempt’. The employer's statement contains a confusing reference to Canadians being brought over to ‘do the work. These men are of military age and already in the army and it appears to us to be folly to take our own men away from the work they are used to and send men from Canada to do their work’.
